The two main benefits I got from completing this pilot was the library information I gathered informally during our meetings. For instance I learned that other college libraries are using different approaches to storing and displaying exam papers. Secondly I learned to recognise that there were many informal channels through which we learn every day. Examples included conversing with librarians outside the through email.
If I was complete this project again I think I may do a few things differently. I would read up the different approaches to learning philosophies in this area. I ignored this area of the scheme.
Also I think I would work on the physical appearance of my blog. It could be useful exercise in learning on how produce a professional looking word press blog. This could be useful showcase for my skills in this area.
Myself and Debora showed two librarians from Tallaght IT a demo of Koha week. The librarians spend mourning with us learning about the front end of Koha. Tallaght IT is introducing Koha very soon. This meeting was arranged by our systems librarian David Hughes after a talk he gave recently on switching to Koha. The meeting was very useful as we exchanged information on inter library loans and overdue book systems. Tallaght IT adopted a point system for overdue books. The systems works on the basis that when students reach a points totals their college privileges are suspended and replacements costs are added. I contacted several university libraries in the UK and United States today that use Kanopy. I was interested to find out whether any of these libraries had a specific user group which used Kanopy more than others. I received four replies. Each library informed that they could not make such a judgement. However one library did get back to me to say that they have had to limit usage of a certain category of film as it was providing so popular. I met a friend that works in a public library over the weekend. They mentioned to me that they have joined to service called https://www.bookcrossing.com/. This service works on the basis that you register the book and then you can receive reviews and location reminders for book as it was swapped around. . I have emailed book crossing to seek more information on the service. I was thinking the service may work well in our book swap section. Also it could good project for transition year student to complete.
Today I responded to FYI from Bury College Library seeking information on our newspaper collection. I informed them there are still three daily newspapers students can borrow on a daily basis. Although we do not record there for my observations they appear very popular with alumni and older students. Also I stated the vast majority of our newspaper collection is available through our databases. I visited Trinity College Library today to collect an inter library loan. When I was collecting my loan I happened to meet the Trinity College Film Librarian Terry McDonald. I and Maire O’Neill had met this last year to discuss film resources. I informed Terry that DBS had acquired Kanopy. I explained how popular the resources was and pricing agreement we are using. I replied to an email forwarded on to me about by colleague Alex Kouker. The email was part of news feed. It related to a request from a library staff member in the University of Edinburgh. They were requesting information on the auxiliaries’ item library desk loan to students. I informed the librarian on the services we offer in DBS Library. If I receive a reply I will inquiry into the items they allow students borrow. Their maybe items out their they we could allow students borrow that we have not taught of yet.
